Amalfi Coast
The land of the rich and the famous! Two teacher wages wouldn’t allow us to stay in the heart of Amalfi Coast, but with very few tourists around, while many are still cautious with travelling, we snagged a great bargain with an Airbnb in Sorrento half the price of what it would normally go for during a summer season. From Sorrento we made day trips out to Ravello, Amalfi Town, the Path of God’s walking down to Positano, Sorrento Peninsula and to the money island Capri!
The first two days were spent using the local bus system along the coast, the cheapest but not the most efficient way to get around. Due to Covid-19 each time we waited in line for 2-3 hours for a bus as they were only running them half full. Generally, we found the Italians were very strict with their Covid-19 guidelines and rules this summer which we respected. The whole of Amalfi Coast is totally picturesque and amazing, but for rocky beaches it wasn’t worth 20-50 euros that they were charging to swim/sunbathe on their private beaches. Every time, bar once, we opted to walking further along to the free side of the beach and just laying our towels down the rocks. The one time we did give in was on our ‘rest day’ where I could only just justify hiring a bed for the whole day making sure we got our money’s worth (and also at the cheapest, dodgiest place we could find!).
After two frustrating days of public transport we hired a scooter for the last day. Slightly more expensive but well worth the money for the freedom and time efficiency of getting around the scenic Amalfi Coast, plus the adrenaline rush hah! This was our favourite day, when we were on scooter, hiking and beach hopping through the ‘local’ swimming holes along the Sorrento peninsula, which most people skip for the Amalfi Coast. Capri was also a really cool/expensive day trip, with only limited amount of time we only did a few attractions like the cable car to the top of Mount Solaro, walking through the town of Capri and the Gardens of Augustus. When I’m rich I’ll be back in my private yacht to explore the rest of the hidden gems of Capri and the Amalfi Coast!
