Mykonos
Flying from the hustle and bustle of the Amalfi Coast, we naturally acclimatised to the laid back and relaxing vibe Mykonos Island had to offer. Usually known for its beach parties, during the 2020 summer there wasn’t much of that going on which only meant more opportunity for us to see its pristine beaches untouched by thousands of other tourists. Sometimes we were the only people at beaches and on the roads - it felt like we had the whole island all to ourselves as we hopped from one beach to another. Our days consisted of bakery visits, scootering to beaches, giros, more beaches, baklava, and then sunset dinners at the beach. For this reason, Greece has quickly become Mark’s favourite country in the world.
You can easily explore the island in a full day with short stops at the main attractions but we decided to tone the pace down and cover it over 3 days as we were 3 weeks into our 6 weeks summer trip. One day to explore the main town/old port, a day to cover the north and east of the island, and a day to see the south of the island is what I would recommend if you had the time.
Stand-out attractions and beaches for us were:
-
Kalafati, with a fun little jetty you can jump off all day.
-
Lia beach, we were gifted with the perfect conditions of no wind and plenty of sunshine! The clarity of the water here was impeccable!
-
Beach walking from Paralia Platis Gialos beach to Paraga Beach.
-
Paradise beach, a super nice stretch of beach with a little jetty around the corner and an awesome reef with a big drop just 20m off the beach. On Paradise Beach the partying started to gain momentum at around 5pm, but if this was any normal summer I could see this spot going off ALL day and night!
-
Lastly the Instagramable narrow white and blue streets, paths, and buildings of Mykonos can’t be missed. We enjoyed losing ourselves in the laneways both early in the day to avoid the crowds and in the evening for its famous night life!
